This includes Intrinsically Safe smartphones, lasers, radios and cameras.
The Intrinsically Safe lasers are certified for Group I – Coal and Group II – other Hazardous Areas (such as Oil and Gas and Chemical plants).
These devices are manufactured to IECEx Standards that limit the amount of Electrical and Thermal Energy that the device is able to produce. This limitation prevents sparks and thermal heat energy, from exceeding the level required to ignite Flammable Gas, Vapours or Combustible dusts. Additionally, Ruggedised Enclosures and Toughened Screens are required for Mechanical (drop) protection, so as to avoid damage if dropped, or other objects fall on the device.
Engineering controls, within the device limit the amount of Electrical Energy within a spark, and the Thermal Energy able to be produced, to safe levels, which are below the ignition point required for the Flammable Gas, Vapours and Combustible dusts. The Engineering controls increase in complexity as the risk rises, and includes redundancy in critical circuits to ensure safe operation.
